Once dark and poky, this breezy family home on the Gold Coast now shines from within.

When Andy and Deb appeared on The Block four years ago, they were already pulling together impressive rooms and winning high praise from the judges. Their latest home renovation, unveiled in online series ‘DNA of Design’, proves that they’ve been honing their carefree, coastal aesthetic to perfection ever since.

This time, the pair were tasked with updating a sprawling, four-bedroom home in the Gold Coast hinterland, not to impress a panel of judges, but to nail a brief supplied by homeowner and Urban Road founder and director, Suzie Atkin. “The brief was to open up the home, iron out the awkward floor plan and lighten and brighten throughout,” says Deb.

The home’s proximity to both the beach and the bush inspired Andy and Deb’s style direction and colour palette. The challenge was to take the dark and dated interiors, and turn them into an open plan home with a seamless connection to the garden and pool area. “Indoor-outdoor living is the key to the functionality of the home,” says Deb.

Making sense of the poky floorplan was one of Andy and Deb’s top tasks for the renovation. Texture gives interest to the monochromatic kitchen and dining area. ‘Valencia’ stone wall by 3d Stone, ‘Issa’ bar stools and ‘Kyle’ rattan dining chairs, Urban Road.

And while the end result is breezy and inviting, the renovation wasn’t all smooth sailing. “It was a very challenging project as the house is extra-large and sits wide on the block with many windows and doors,” says Deb.

Maximising natural light without compromising temperature control was a concern the couple addressed with carefully selected curtains and shutters by Luxaflex.

Just the right amount of light filters into the living area care of sheer Luxaflex ‘Byron’ curtains in the colour pure white. An extra large rug from Rug Culture anchors the living space, which is furnished with ‘Otto’ sofa and Rocco armchairs from Urban Road.

“Window furnishings enhanced the look of the entire home. Everything worked aesthetically but served a purpose functionally too,” says Deb.

“We love walking through the living area through the soft floaty curtains to the outdoor area/ It gives us luxury retreat vibes. Like a holiday every day of the year.”
