13 dreamy quilts that will have you covered for all seasons

Whether you call it a quilt, a duvet, or a doona, the right bedding can dramatically impact your sleep at night.
best all-weather quilts

There’s nothing better than snuggling up under a plush quilt at the end of a long day. But when it comes to the best quilts, Australia has a lot of seasonal variations to consider. Do you run hot or cold at night, for example? Or prefer a weighted feel over a soft, fluffy one?

It’s worth considering these questions, because your doona, duvet (or whatever you call it) can play a major role in maximising your quality of sleep. Just like choosing the right mattress and sleeping on the right pillow, when it comes to getting a good night’s sleep, a quilt plays an essential role in keeping you warm all night long. So choosing the right one for you can be life-changing.

“You should feel comfortable beneath your quilt from the moment you climb into bed, to the moment you wake each morning,” explains Dimity Green. As part of Sheridan’s expert bedding team, Dimity knows exactly what you should be looking for to choose the right quilt for you.

“A quilt that is too hot or cold can prevent you from maintaining a regular sleeping temperature and will, therefore, disrupt your deep sleeping rhythms,” adds Dimity.

Luckily, choosing the right quilt for you is easier than you think. Here, we’ve picked out our favourites as well as a few key points to consider while you make your next quilt purchase

Differences between light and heavy quilts

The weight of your quilt can dramatically impact your sleep. Heavier quilts and calming blankets have become popular due to their ability to calm and soothe throughout the night. On the other hand, lightweight quilts are an ideal choice for hot sleepers, warmer months and those who hate feeling confined while sleeping.

Lightweight down and microfibre fills make a quilt incredibly cuddly and fluffy, while heavier quilts are usually made of warm materials like wool. When it comes to determining the weight of your quilt, you’ll want to pay attention to GSM (grams per square metre). This indicates the density of the fabric and overall weight of your duvet.

“It’s important to choose the right fill weight for the season,” explains Dimity.

“Some bedding is for ‘all seasons’, while others are specifically designed for cooler or hotter months. For winter, natural fibres such as wool are one of the best insulators, however, are a little heavier than feather and down.”

If you love a lighter quilt through the warmer months and don’t want to buy a heavier quilt for winter, consider adding a stylish bed throw to your bedding collection.

“Throws are the perfect way to improve warmth as the temperature drops as they can be layered on top of your trans-seasonal bedding,” recommends Bed Threads’ founder Genevieve Rosen.

“Choose high quality, natural fabrics such as linen which is a natural insulator that traps the heat in while still remaining light and breathable.”

What is the best type of quilt to buy in Australia?

In the world of quilts and duvets the material your blanket is made of plays the biggest role in ensuring you get a quality night of rest. After all, the material will affect the weight of your blanket, as well as how well it retains heat, and whether or not it’s appropriate for those of us who suffer from allergens and asthma.

When it comes to choosing the best quilt materials for you, there are two general categories…

Natural fibres vs man-made fibres

“Natural fibres are suitable for most sleeping types and your choice should be dependent on your preferred weight and the level of warmth required for your climate,” advises Dimity. Natural fibres and organic fibres include cotton, wool, mulberry silk, TENCEL Lyocell, feather and down.

On the other end of the spectrum are man-made fibres like polyester. “Man-made fibres are best for people who have allergies to feather and down,” explains Dimity. “Premium quality polyester will create the same lightweight warmth and loft of feather and down.”

What is the warmest quilt for winter in Australia?

The material of your quilt also impacts heat retention. For some, there’s nothing better than being warm and toasty throughout the night, while for others, something lightweight and more breathable is ideal – especially when it comes to summer. Lighter materials like bamboo and microfibres are more breathable than natural fibres like wool, but there’s no beating wool’s ability to retain heat all night long.

“Different fibres have different weight feelings and warmth ratings,” explains Dimity.

“It’s important to consider how these fibres feel before investing in bedding to ensure you can maintain a comfortable body temperature throughout the night.”
