Orchids are a vaguely terrifying gift to receive. They are so beautiful you want it to stick around – but unless you have prior expertise your confidence in your ability to keep the pretty plant alive may be low.
How do you do it?
In reality, you got to treat that orchid mean
Orchids are the most extraordinary plants. They grow between rocks, up trees, hanging from cliffs and in every kind of place you would think it impossible to live.
The problem comes when people try growing them at home and instead of mimicking this ‘hard knocks’ lifestyle, they pamper them.
The result is a plant that gets over-watered, over-fed and just over it!
Stop pampering it, no really
The secret is to “treat ’em mean and keep ’em keen”. Mimic their poor natural habitat by planting them into nothing but bark, possibly mixed with sphagnum moss to help hold the water in, or even in broken-up polystyrene boxes.
Feed and water them sparingly, and pot them into a small pot as they like a cramped spot.
