A standout plant for shaded gardens is the oak-leaf hydrangea (Hydrangea quercifolia), a relation of the better-known moptop and lacecap hydrangeas that fill our gardens in summer.
It has spires of creamy white, lacy flowers and large, oak-leaf shaped leaves which colour in autumn.
All hydrangeas need regular water – a drawback in our parched times – but a deep soak once or twice a week is enough to keep this plant looking very handsome.
For long-lasting flowers through summer, also look out for new varieties of the repeat-flowering ‘Endless Summer’ hydrangea. They are great in a pot and flower well into autumn.
